Independent Study in Color

I wanted an opportunity to study color and its reaction to other colors. I used Color-aid papers for these experiments. These are the same papers that Josef Albers used in his color theory classes. I used the set of 314 colors. Opening up a box of these 6" by 9" papers is like opening up a brand new box of crayons, only better. There are more colors and they come in measured gradations. The first thing I did was spread them out on a large surface so I could see a little bit of every color. It felt a little like walking into a well-stocked fabric store, only for me, 5,000 bolts of fabric in one place is the best sensation yet. The hardest thing to do is to tear into the first piece.

My first assignment was to pick two songs and try to interpret them using color.

My next assignment was to do a series of self portraits. I chose to work with just torn paper so I could try to combat my perfectionist tendencies.

The final assignment was to choose a single complementary color scheme and examine two opposite emotions or ideas though the use of color and shape. A secondary goal was to choose colors that would convey a feeling of transparency. I picked two pairs of emotions: "Peace and Contentment" and "Anger and Envy."
