2003 Journal QuiltPages

January - September 2003, Copyright © 2003, Maria Elkins, All Rights Reserved.

The second Journal QuiltPages project was proposed by Karey Bresenhan, Director of the International Quilt Festival. It was to be "a free-form exercise in creativity, specifically planned to encourage quilt artists to stretch and grow." The project was open only to members of the QuiltArt list and the QuiltPages were displayed at the 2003 IQF show.

I started the year with a fascination with patterns. I had taken several black and white photographs of paving stones and walkways that I thought I would enjoy using as a basis for my journal quilts. I was thinking of it as being a "Looking Down" theme. I also wanted to try some different types of fabrics and paints. But, after making just a few, I found I was so bored with the whole idea that I figured everyone else would be too.

My journal quilts languished for a few months. Then, while looking through some photographs with my daughters, I was overcome with inspiration! Most of my quilts involve people, so why not use faces on my journal quilts? That way I could still experiment with various paints and pastels, and I could also experiment with different ways to quilt the faces. But I also wanted to challenge myself to use colors I don't normally use. In reality, that means any color that is not blue!

The final challenge came when I tried to make the first three journal quilts somehow relate to the new portrait journal quilts. As a result, the first three were really finished last and are a bit hodge-podge.

QuiltPage 1 - Snapshots

Comments: I liked the overall look and texture of the quilted paving in this piece, but I added the photos to tie it in with the other portrait quilts.
Coloring Agent: Dr. Ph. Martin's Craft Ink, sponge painted on stretch silk charmeuse (left side) and cotton lycra (right side). Layered with laser printed photos on cotton, silk organza and iridescent organza, and foiled with Jones Tones Foils.

QuiltPage 2 - Mariah

Comments: This one is so much better after I cut the window for Mariah to peak through. Alone, the tile pattern was so boring and predictable.
Coloring Agent: Nature's Design Fabric Paint by Deka (no longer manufactured) on raw silk (left side) and 100% linen (on right side). Layered over portrait painted with DekoArt SoSoft Fabric Acrylics and Shimmering Pearls.
Quilting Thread: Sulky metallics and sliver metallics.

QuiltPage 3 - Looking Up

Comments: I liked the paving stones so much on this one, but I couldn't resist adding someone peaking up at me.
Coloring Agent: Jacquard Green Label Silk Colors on silk habotai (left side) and pimatex cotton (right side). Black lines done with Pebeo Water-based Gutta. Layered with portrait painted with Jacquard Silk Colors on silk habotai.

QuiltPage 4 - Stephanie

Comments: I wanted to find a way to have detailed control over this portrait, so I decided to explore ways to use colored pencils on fabric so they would be permanent.
Coloring Agent: Derwent Watercolor pencils covered with Setacolor Colorless Extender; embellished with photos printed on HP transfer paper.
Quilting Thread: YLI Kaleidoscope threads

QuiltPage 7 - Jaymie

Comments: This one proved to me that stippling the face definitely does not enhance the three-dimensional quality of the facial contours.

Comments: Another one where I tried to paint quickly, loosely, freely. I wanted this one to be fun!

QuiltPage 9 - Bethany

Comments: This was the first face I painted. I liked it so much, it was the last one I quilted -- I was so afraid of ruining it! This one is still my favorite. Maybe it's because of her eyes...
Coloring Agent: Tsukineko All-Purpose Ink (available from Web of Threads)
Quilting Thread: YLI 100 weight silk and invisible threads
